Help Support Small Businesses In the UK

Something quite worrying for the local and small business owner seems to be happening wherever I look these days especially right on my doorstep where pubs and shops seem to be closing and Tesco Express and Sainsbury's Locals seem to be popping up at what I find to be an alarming rate.

I live in a modest suburb and within 2 miles of my house we have many supermarkets, including a Sainsburys, a Tesco, a Morrisions, an ASDA, a Aldi and a Lidl. How many supermarkets does a local community need?

Add to this the closure of a private furniature store and a local pub and in there place....... yes you've guessed it a Sainsbury's Local and a Tesco Express!! These have opening within 100 yards of each other and more worryingly the same distance to a group of small private shops.

I for one avoid these new corporate stores and always try to buy from the corner shops if possible, sometimes it's not, but the majority of the time it is. I feel its very important for us to keep our local economies going, wherever you live and not to give in to these corporate giants. And OK, I know Its impossible and not practical to avoid them when you need to do your families weekly shop, we all need a supermarket but not 8!

I have also noticed that the corner shop is often cheap than the others too, making you think how much money is the Tescos making on a bottle of wine with their massive buying power compared to the local shopkeeper?? If we continue to support him he will stay in business, but if we give in to the big stores they will soon close their doors and we will be left with no choice where to shop.

Online stores also have to compete with big corporate funded websites with huge buying power. Some brands also sell direct on their own websites, which is an obvious and sensible thing for them to do and they probably make a huge amount more profit than they would if they sold to shops and independent retailers. Some brands dont sell direct which i applaude, and will only sell their products through retailers, but many do. How are shops supposed to compete with that?

This may seem like I have a bee in my bonnet about this, but look at the amount of companies that have gone bust over the last couple of years in the UK. If some of these big companies are struggling to survive what chance in the current financial climate does the small independent business have? Companies like ours are already having to cut profits in order to compete and I'm sure like us many are happy to do this as long as we still get support from the public.

So, even if you don't choose to buy from Model Kits Direct, I would much rather you buy from another small online business or a local independent model shop than a massive online retailer to which you are just another number, or a chainstore which probably has no passion or knowledge about the products they are selling to you. Ive noticed some Airfix products pop up in my local Sainsbury's!! I wonder how much product support they would be about to give me if I asked them? Well that's easy, none!
